Special Issue of Inverse Problem and Imaging (IPI) in Medical Image Analysis

Biomedical Image Analysis is an interdisciplinary research field that brings together mathematicians, engineers, physicists, physicians and computer scientists among others. In the recent years we have witnessed an enormous progress on the development of intelligent in-vivo and ex-vivo acquisitions devices towards understanding the anatomical, functional, etc. behavior of organs. The quality of the obtained measurements varies across modalities and often the exploitation of these measurements requires the ability to reconstruct and present the signal in a human-friendly fashion, as well to exploit meaningful information towards understanding, diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

The above tasks often involve the selection of a mathematical model towards the representation of the task (parametric approach), the connection between the model and the av ailable observations and the optimization of the modelparameters with respect to the data (inference). In this issue we would like to explore the use of mathematical and statistical concepts and theories to understand, interpret, and model the problems arising from medical imaging. We also would like to promote the development of efficient numerical methods for solving these problems. Potential contributions are not limited to:
- mathematical methods, inverse modeling and data acquisition
- mathematical methods, inverse modeling and signal reconstruction
- mathematical methods, inverse modeling and information fusion/registration
- mathematical methods, inverse modeling and organ extraction/image segmentation
- mathematical methods, inverse modeling and dimensionality reduction, population modeling, etc.
- mathematical methods, inverse modeling and clinical applications, ...

The issue is expected to be published in spring 2010. Important dates:
